Vanguard Total Stock Market Index ETF (VTI) Description

VTI aims to match the performance of the CRSP US Total Market Index, which measures the investment return of a select group of stocks with high dividend yields.

The fund employs an indexing investment approach designed to track the performance of the index, which represents approximately 100% of the investable U.S. stock market and includes large-, mid-, small-, and micro-cap stocks. It invests by sampling the index, meaning that it holds a broadly diversified collection of securities that, in the aggregate, approximates the full index in terms of key characteristics.

VTI Equivalents

The VTI mutual fund equivalent is VTSAX, the Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund Admiral Shares. Investors with an account at Vanguard who prefer mutual funds can consider VTSAX as a VTI alternative.

The VTI Fidelity equivalent is FSKAX, Fidelity Total Market Index Fund. Fidelity does not have an ETF equivalent. Only buy Fidelity mutual funds through a Fidelity account to avoid unnecessary fees.

The VTI iShares equivalent is ITOT, iShares Core S&P Total US Stock Market ETF.

The mutual fund equivalents are only a good option if your broker does not charge fees to trade mutual funds or if you have a brokerage account with the mutual fund provider (e.g., Vanguard or Fidelity).

Otherwise, choose the ETFs.

Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI)

The Vanguard Total Stock Market Index ETF is a popular investment for passive investors seeking market returns.

The fund tracks the broadest U.S. investment index available. With VTI, investors essentially invest in the entire U.S. stock market, including large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap stocks.

VTI pays quarterly dividends. Investors receive quarterly dividend payments in March, June, September, and December.

VTI is an excellent option for investors who do not want to conduct the stock research required to select individual stocks but want to achieve broad market returns beyond  S&P 500 ETFs such as VOO.

Active investors who own individual stocks can supplement their research with tools such as the Sure Dividend Newsletter, which offers subscribers ten dividend growth stock picks to subscribers every month.

Research multiple dividend ETFs before choosing in which to invest. Review the VTI dividend history, current VTI dividend yield, and VTI holdings before investing. Past payments are not indicative of future dividends.
